Decathlon City Gijón

On January 10, 2022, the new Decathlon City store was opened in Gijón (Asturias). It is a relocation to larger premises in the same square Seis de Agosto. The new store has a total area of 489 m² distributed over 3 floors: a ground floor through which the store is accessed, with window displays and checkout area, a basement floor with a salesroom and staff rooms, and a mezzanine floor with a salesroom, a warehouse, and a technical room. Thanks to this surface extension, the City Concept by the French brand is optimized to reach urban populations in large cities: the range of products available in the store is expanded, and for time-saving matters, it offers a pick-up point for online orders.

For this relocation, GMD Solutions developed the projects (architecture, fire protection, electricity, and air conditioning/ventilation) to obtain the building permit and the legalization of the low voltage installation. It was also in charge of the management of the awarding tenders and, in addition, carried out the project management during the 8 weeks it took to complete the work. Relying on the experience of companies that regularly work with Decathlon, such as Melcor (civil works, electricity, air conditioning, and PCI) and Grupo Agüero (intrusion and CCTV), this reform of a city center location was executed quickly and with the highest possible standards according to the client’s criteria.

The store is equipped with a stairlift at the entrance and an elevator indoors to facilitate access to people with reduced mobility. It also has several facades and windows that allow a very interesting environment of natural light for a store of this size. Five new air conditioning units and a ventilation system with heat recovery were installed, optimizing the indoor air quality in a sustainable way. All the lighting was done with Trilux LED track-type luminaires in the sales areas and panel lighting in the staff rooms and toilets. In terms of fire protection, analog smoke detectors and fire extinguishers were installed, and a layer of vermiculite was applied to the supporting structure to meet the requirements of current regulations. Finally, the store has a sign on each of the three storefronts, manufactured and installed by Project Sign.

This is the third opening of a City store after the ones located in Granada and Zaragoza. In total, there are more than 20 stores of this type that we have opened in Spain for the group specializing in the sale of sports equipment.

GMD Solutions has been developing retail projects for 10 years for clients such as Decathlon, Hugo Boss, and Worten.
