On March 1, 2023, Decathlon opened the doors of its store in the renovated City format in one of the streets adjacent to the Malaga shopping street, the famous Marqués de Larios street. The French brand has thus relocated the old store, located about 200m from the new store. The new location, at 3 Strachan Street and forming part of the Palacio de Salinas, has a floor area of 256m2. The French brand’s concept of City stores is being developed in Spain’s most significant urban centers to bring its products closer to customers, and, specifically in this store, the new image has been implemented both inside and outside.
GMD Solutions developed the different civil works and installation projects for this refurbishment. The renovation of the premises took 16 weeks, including the demolition phase, to leave the premises unfinished. Instalaciones Industriales Somains was the company in charge of the complete renovation of the premises (electricity, air conditioning, PCI, and civil works). In the final phase of the work, Grupo Agüero (intrusion and CCTV) and ProjectSign (signage) carried out the work under the supervision of GMD to deliver a store in the proper condition for opening.
We overcame several challenges during this project. It was a work carried out in the city’s center, with access restrictions and loading and unloading hours, in the middle of the Christmas season. In addition, the current situation of scarcity and unreliability in supplies. Being in a BIC environment (with archaeological protection), the supervision of an archaeologist was necessary for the sanitation work. Also, the instructions of the municipal housing institute were followed to preserve the range of colors on the façade, rebuilding the new image and adapting it to the area’s standards.
The air conditioning, air treatment, and electrical installations were completely renovated. The store has been equipped with fire detection. At the aesthetic level, Decathlon City Málaga has implemented the new image for the “City” formats launched in our previous project, Decathlon City Alcalá, with a more modern, innovative look and where the value of the different products is more attractive to the customer.

There are already more than 30 stores and different maintenance and logistics campaigns in the projects in which GMD has participated, such as the stores in Ávila, Santiago de Compostela, Gijón, Salamanca, and San Sebastián de los Reyes. Currently, GMD Solutions leads the air conditioning renovation plan for 2023, along with other projects nationwide.
