During the months of September and October 2018, GMD Solutions, in collaboration with Energio, carried out the energy audits of 5 buildings of the company Carbures Aerospace & Defense in Illescas, Burgo de Osma, Seville, Jerez, and Puerto de Santa María.

These audits consist of analyzing the energy status of each center by assessing the type and condition of the building envelope and facilities (mainly air conditioning, lighting, and DHW). The presence or absence of renewable energy systems, such as solar thermal water heating systems or photovoltaic panel installations, was also assessed. Each audit proposes, in addition to the energy assessment of the building, a series of measures that would allow maintaining a good operation of the center by reducing its energy consumption.

Some of the most common measures that can be found for this type of building in an energy efficiency audit are the following:

• Replacement of traditional lighting (fluorescent tubes, metal halide hoods, CFC downlights) with LED technology. In most cases, this change would allow savings equal to or greater than 60% of light consumption.
• Replacement of old air conditioning units. Systems that are more than 15 to 20 years old tend to have very low performance compared to current machines. The replacement of these units can result in savings of 15% in total electricity consumption.
• Installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof. In some regions of Spain, the significant solar radiation makes it advisable to use solar energy to support the electricity supply of a work center. This type of installation would allow savings of 30% in electricity consumption.

In addition, the energy efficiency audits propose an optimization of the electricity contracts for each center, if necessary. This optimization may include the reduction of the contracted power or the installation of capacitor banks to reduce reactive energy consumption.
