Energy Efficiency improvement project in Meliá hotels

Since the second quarter of 2018, GMD Solutions has collaborated with its partner Indoorclima to propose a global energy improvement solution to the hotel chain Meliá Hotels International through the project #CO2PERATE. This project is divided into two main phases: the first corresponds to an energy audit of the different hotels of the Mallorcan group and the second phase to install different monitoring and control equipment.

GMD Solutions carried out energy audits in more than 90 hotels all over the Iberian Peninsula, the Balearic and Canary Islands, and even in Germany, France, and Italy. During the on-site visit, the different energy consumers of the buildings were reviewed in terms of electricity, gas, and water. Our team focused especially on the air conditioning installations, which is the strategic focus of the project.

Once the audit was completed, Indoorclima designed the architecture with different elements to be installed in each hotel, such as power analyzers and meters that allow monitoring 80% of the total consumption of the hotel establishments. In addition, each architecture includes an SGClima management system developed by Indoorclima to control the air conditioning equipment, mainly chillers, in the different buildings. GMD Solutions was in charge of the installation of the equipment proposed by Indoorclima, contracting the installers, managing the installations, and supervising the whole operation. In total, about 70 installations were carried out both in Spain and in Germany.

At the end of 2019, after carrying out the first installations, a third consulting phase aimed at optimizing the resources used in the hotels began to be developed based on the first results obtained. The objective was to carry out visits every 3 months to all Meliá hotels with very high consumption. GMD Solutions was in charge of the Madrid and Andalusia areas for this phase. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, at the end of March 2020, this phase was suspended due to the lack of occupancy and the crisis in the sector.

The #CO2PERATE project, which has been one of the most important in 2019 and 2020, aims to prevent the Meliá chain from emitting more than 66,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, the equivalent of that absorbed by 16,500 adult trees. In fact, in 2020, Meliá Hotels International has been named the most sustainable hotel chain in the world, validating the project worldwide.
