During the month of May 2019, GMD Solutions carried out with Powen, its strategic partner for self-consumption photovoltaic projects, the installation of about 500 photovoltaic panels on the roof of the Colegio Estudiantes, an educational center located in the north of Madrid, in the neighborhood of Las Tablas. For this project, GMD Solutions headed the project, supervising and managing the different aspects of the work.

The mounted panels have an output of 275Wp each; therefore, the total installed power is 137.5kWp. The school roof used for the installation has a total area of 2,500m2 of which more than 800m2 are now covered with photovoltaic panels. Besides the panels, the installation has three Huawei 40kW inverters and a 5mm thick anodized aluminum structure allowing the panels to be fixed at an inclination of 30° and thus optimize their performance.

Spain is one of the most privileged countries in Europe for the exploitation of solar energy. In Madrid, annual solar radiation is approximately 2,000kWh/m2, which means that this installation will generate around 212,000kWh per year for the building’s own consumption. Given that the expected use of the installation is 92.5% (i.e., 92.5% of the energy produced will be used), the school will save more than 16,500€ during the first year.

If the first objective of a self-consumption installation is to generate its own energy and allow significant economic savings for the building, it is estimated in the case of Colegio Estudiantes that the installation will result in a reduction in CO2 emissions of about 63,000kg per year. Therefore, this commitment to the production of photovoltaic energy is clearly a significant step towards a more sustainable environment.

In addition, GMD Solutions, through its Energy Efficiency department, has the capacity to draw up self-consumption projects of any size throughout the national territory. The Colegio Estudiantes installation is one of those executed in Madrid, together with Powen with whom GMD Solutions began to collaborate at the end of 2018 in the self-consumption project of Centro de Ocio NUDOS in Ciudad Real.
