On January 17, 2020, the photovoltaic self-consumption installation of the Salesian San Juan Bosco School in Puertollano (Ciudad Real) was inaugurated in the presence of the councilor for the environment, Noelia Caballero; the councilor in charge of works, Jesús Caballero; Fernando García, the new provincial inspector of Salesianos Santiago el Mayor (which groups the centers of Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla y León, Galicia, La Rioja, Madrid, Navarra and the Basque Country) and, of course, the School Director, Ernesto Rodríguez-Arias.

This project, led by Powen in collaboration with GMD Solutions, made it possible to mount 311 photovoltaic modules of 320Wp each to be mounted on two of the school’s roofs, for a total installed power of 99.52kWp. The energy produced in direct current by the panels is transformed into alternating current thanks to two Huawei inverters of 33 and 60kW respectively. This installation will produce about 150,000 kWh each year, that is, more than 50% of the school’s needs. Additionally, the possibility of discharging surplus production into the network when the establishment does not use the energy produced (during holidays, for example) is taken into account.

During the event, the council representative highlighted the contribution of this project to improve the environment, a particularly critical issue at present, since it will prevent the emission of some 44,500kg of CO2 annually. The director of the school and the provincial inspector of Salesians also emphasized the importance of a project like this, in an educational establishment to bring young people closer to technologies that make possible a more sustainable future. Before the inauguration, an explanatory seminar on photovoltaic technology was held with the professional training students of the school, who showed their interest in renewable energies.

This project, which has had a great impact in the local press, constitutes the second collaboration between Powen and GMD Solutions for a self-consumption project in a school establishment, after installing 137.5kWp in Colegio Estudiantes in Madrid. In addition, GMD Solutions carried out the 56kWp installation project for the Club Ocio Nudos in Ciudad Real.

GMD Solutions is strongly committed to photovoltaic self-consumption, developing projects, and taking charge of construction management in collaboration with its partner Powen, to move towards a more sustainable future.
